Herobear Flies
to Universal
Universal Pictures is in final negotiations to
acquire the animated feature film rights to Herobear & the Kid from
Astonish Comics. Chuck Gordon's Daybreak Production. and Adrian Askarieh's Prime Universe
Productions will produce the film. Animator Mike Kunkel created the series about
Tyler, a little boy who inherits a stuffed polar teddy bear and a pocket watch from his dead grandfather. The bear comes to life as a superhero and the
pair have many adventures while touching on real childhood issues like fitting
in at a new school, dealing with bullies, love and imagination. Kunkel, who has
worked as an animator on feature films like Tarzan, Hercules and The
Pagemaster and the TV series Dilbert, will direct the film and co-write the script with Jeph
Loeb, who will also executive produce. In addition to being the award-winning
writer of Batman: The Long Halloween for DC Comics, Loeb has many credits
in Hollywood writing for film (Teen Wolf, Commando) and producing for
film and television (the upcoming Buffy: The Animated Series, and Firestorm).
